Romantic Fruit and Chocolate Desserts for Valentine’s Day

Bring the luxury of chocolate to the table for Valentine’s Day in three simple romantic desserts – a classic French Parisian dessert of fruit topped with crunchy toasted chocolate, a velvety chocolate-orange mousse and the ideal romantic dish for sharing, strawberries dipped in rich chocolate.

Fruit with Toasted Chocolate Topping

Bring a touch of European luxury with a simple French Parisian-style dessert: mixed sweet and semi-sweet fruit topped with a chocolate crust. Any mixture of fruits can be used, fresh or tinned. Cut the fruit into slices or spoon-sized pieces.

For 2 servings

  • A mixture of fruits (e.g. sliced pears and mandarin orange segments)
  • 3 oz (85 g) of white chocolate
  • Vanilla ice cream
  1. Prepare the fruit as necessary.
  2. Grate the chocolate finely and leave to dry for a few moments
  3. Pre-heat the oven to 525°F (275°C).
  4. Arrange the fruit on an oven-safe plate and sprinkle over the chocolate.
  5. Place the plate approx 3” (7 cm) under the top element of the oven (or the grill) and toast for several minutes until the chocolate starts to brown.
  6. Divide the dish between two dessert plates and serve immediately with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.


Milk or dark chocolate can also be used: toast for around 5 minutes until crunchy.

Chocolate-Orange Mousse

The classic combination of chocolate and orange in a velvety mousse. This recipe is best processed in a blender but can be produced using an electric hand mixer.

For 2-3 servings

  • 3 oz (170 mg) of semi-sweet chocolate morsels
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 egg
  • ½ tsp grated orange rind
  • 2 tbsp of packed brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp of orange juice
  • ½ cup of whipping cream

For garnish (if desired):

  • Whipped cream or orange whipped cream
  • Mandarin orange segments
  1. Melt the chocolate over boiling water in a double boiler or in the microwave (for melting in the microwave, see below).
  2. Whip the whipping cream.
  3. Blend the egg yolk, egg, sugar and orange rind until frothy.
  4. Add the melted chocolate and the orange juice and blend well.
  5. Fold in the whipped cream
  6. Pour the mixture into 2 or 3 serving dishes and refrigerate until set.
  7. Garnish, if desired with more whipped cream and 3-4 mandarin orange segments or cream whipped with a couple of drops of orange extract.

Chocolate-dipped strawberries

A simple dish for sharing.

For 2 servings

  • Approx. 20 strawberries
  • 3 oz (170 g) of semi-sweet chocolate morsels
  • ½ tsp of butter or shortening

For garnish (if desired):

  • Chopped nuts or sugar strands
  1. Melt the chocolate and the butter or shortening in a double boiler or the microwave (see below) and allow to cool to lukewarm.
  2. Rinse the strawberries and dry them carefully (chocolate does not adhere to wet fruit).
  3. Insert a wooden pick in each strawberry or hold each strawberry by the stem and dip the strawberries into the melted chocolate.
  4. If desired, then dip the strawberries into the chopped nuts or sugar strands.
  5. Place the strawberries individually onto a well-greased wire rack and refrigerate until firm.
  6. If making the day before, transfer the fruit from the rack to a serving dish when firm and cover with plastic wrap.
  7. Do not prepare more than 24 hours in advance.

How to Melt Chocolate in the Microwave

Place chocolate morsels or small pieces of chocolate in a well-greased microwave-safe bowl and cook on High in the microwave for 15 seconds at a time until the chocolate has fully melted, stirring after each heating phase.
